History behind the artwork

In 2010, the author began a series of sculptures inspired by the “nahual”, with the idea of reclaiming its meaning. Many people know this character, in a negative connotation.

Abel shows the “nahual” as the human soul, enriched and linked to the spirit of animals, helping to exercise its virtuosity on earth.

This nahual is particularly dedicated to musicians, who are connected with animals symbolically linked to this art, such as birds and snails.

History behind the artwork

In the Mayan lands there is the possibility of coexisting with animals that in other places don’t even know.

At night, beautiful white owls can be seen flying between the houses, and during the day countless birds are distinguished among the trees.

In the mornings and afternoons the flocks of parrots pass in large groups, as well as the “Cau” or “k’aues” birds, who also wait for breadcrumbs in the squares or restaurants.

The author enjoys seeing them, and merges with their spirits by representing them in these two pieces of sculpture.

Inspired by the owls and the characteristic stone of the region; “macedonia” , Abel shapes in these sculptures the representation of the duality of spirit that the shaman priests have, linked to the animals.

History behind the artwork

The “tamemes” are people of great strength, and we owe to them having most of our food on the table. The term “tameme” comes from the Nahuatl word “tlamama”, which means to carry.

In the past the “tamemes”, carried on their backs loads that could be people, items for trade, among other things. Today, we can see them in the plots, at the harvest, at the markets and even on the streets selling their products.

This piece pays homage to these people who dedicate their lives to providing us with food.

The artist expresses his opinion; it is a work that is usually not as valued as it should be.
