History behind the artwork

In the country, night after night, Abel and Grandma Rufina sit down to drink hot pot coffee.

She tells him stories, and he contemplates the depths of the cold night, while looking at the stars.

The night is so dark that the silhouettes of their bodies cannot be clearly distinguished.

What seemed to be only stars are actually a combination of fireflies and heavenly bodies.

History behind the artwork

Abel had multiple experiences, in his childhood home, within the Oaxacan community.

The experiences he had in the countryside, are those that give motives to daily subjects for multiple works, described in a very personal way by the author.

In this specific painting we meet Aunt Lolita; one of Abel’s favorite relatives.

She is portrayed at the moment in which she transmits to the artist the knowledge of the pitaya or “tuna” harvest.

With a stick, she respectfully takes the fruits, placing them directly in the baskets so she won’t prick her hands.

This is an activity that marked the author, because it seemed to him an almost spiritual process.

History behind the artwork

This representation includes two women in relation with musical instruments.

Juxtaposing the female figure with the shape of a guitar, Abel describes the desire of the human being to be played as an instrument.

An instrument must be played, both with respect and decision. This is how he perceives a relationship with anyone else.

In a playful way, which is how he usually approaches any topic, we admire his fresh and disjointed characters interacting.
