History behind the artwork

This is Abel Vazquez’s masterpiece; a work that took 4 years to complete.

It is a tribute to Melva Medina, an artist and his muse. She’s been his companion for 30 years and the mother of his daughters.

The painting does not have an horizontal reading, it is a cluster of ideas where the master describes different facets and stages of Melva’s life and personality. Her dreams, development, magic, eroticism and desires.

It describes the spirit that has managed to unite their work and create a family that is totally dedicated to art. Some elements of nature are understood, within the narrative, such as the “nopales” and the “grana cochinilla”; which is a parasite that gets encrusted and is very admired by the artist, since a magenta color dye is obtained from it. The form of its growth is a mystery, and this makes it perfect to represent one of the traits of his companion’s personality that he cannot fully decipher. The relationship is complex but it is also enriching, that is why the painting allows a thousand readings, there are no limits.

Within this work we can also see the presence of the “nahuales” and many little animals in their environment, always immersed among the generous mother earth, where different planes can be noticed and a central element; a big cactus that is the central axis of the composition, for this monumental painting.
